We the member-activists of the International Association of Indic Academicians, a worldwide body of academicians promoting Indic Civilization on college campuses, and the undersigned from all over the world, bring your attention to the following grave situation.
The misrepresentation of India in general, and Indian culture in particular, has reached epidemic proportions in the Western media and the academia. The first item of the series on Believers on Aghoris recently released by the CNN, narrated by Reza Aslan, clearly demonstrates that the Western media has so far proved incorrigible in this respect. To cite only one example, it refers to the Shivalinga as a phallus. A major text by a known Western academic viz. Wendy Doniger also does the same. The parents of some of the Indian-American children have lodged a suit against the State of California, which continues to depict Indian culture in a poor light when compared to other cultures, and is further proof of how the American academia continues to be unfair to India even at the secondary level. How India and Indian culture are misrepresented at the tertiary level has been documented by several authors and public intellectuals in the Western Academia.
Your excellencies, the misrepresentation of Indian culture in Western Media and Academia is no longer a theoretical question. Intellectuals and historians have established a symbiotic relationship between trivialization of a culture with prejudice, discrimination, racism, violence, murder and even genocide. Something similar was done by Nazis against the Jews before the Holocaust during World War II. Indian-Americans have been assaulted and murdered in a recent spate of violence in the US. Thus, the prejudice against Indian culture is culminating in murder of Indians. In all schools of jurisprudence the Western Media and the Academia, have a legal liability for the murders of Indians, in addition to moral culpability.
We the undersigned, therefore, demand that the Indian Government appoint a Commission of Inquiry on Western Bias and Error in order to examine the extent and nature of misrepresentation of India and Indian culture in the Western media and academia. And, if the Commission finds that there is a systemic bias and error that exists in the Western media and the academia, then take suitable punitive action against both. Furthermore, recommend steps on how to eliminate such a bias from both.
